Ben Axler Founder and Chief Investment Officer

Mr. Axler is the founder of Spruce Point Capital Management and co-founded Prescience Point Research Group (2012-2014), a short-focused research firm. Mr. Axler is an activist short-seller, forensic financial researcher, and has exposed billions of dollars of financial schemes globally. Prior to founding his company in 2009, Mr. Axler spent eight years as an investment banker with Credit Suisse and Barclays Capital where he structured and executed financing, derivative risk management, and M&A deals for leading Fortune 500 clients. Mr. Axler’s work has been widely recognized in the financial industry for its originality and track record of performance:

  • Spruce Point Capital Management was named the #2 and #3 most impactful activist short seller in 2018 and 2019, respectively, by Activist Insight.
  • In December 2016, Sentieo recognized Mr Axler’s @sprucepointcap as one of the top 15 most popular accounts in the topic of finance on Twitter.
  • In March 2016, Business Insider and SumZero named Mr. Axler as their top idea generating short-seller after an analysis of the performance of SumZero’s 12,000 members’ short recommendations made since 2008.

Mr. Axler is a frequent market commentator and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg/BNN, and FOX Business television, and in the print edition of Financial Post and Barron’s.  Mr Axler was also profiled in the book “The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work.”

Mr. Axler graduated from Yale University with a Masters degree in Statistics, and received both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Statistics and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Business Administration from Rutgers College, where he graduated with Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors.

Daniel Oliver, Chief Operating and Compliance Officer

Mr. Oliver joined Spruce Point Capital Management from Academy Investment Management, a global statistical arbitrage hedge fund manager. As one of Academy’s early employees, Mr. Oliver was responsible for implementing and maintaining an institutional-quality infrastructure. During his eight years at the firm Mr. Oliver gained broad experience in the areas of operations, finance, investor relations, and compliance.

Previous to Academy, Mr. Oliver worked for PwC in their assurance practice.  Mr. Oliver graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelors in Business Administration, summa cum laude, in finance and accounting.
